 | Newmarket Equine Clinic has two full-time equine veterinarians and offers a comprehensive approach to horse health. |
Preventive health care |
Maintaining your horses’ health through preventive health care has benefits that include lower overall veterinary costs and a longer, more active life. Basic preventive care includes balanced nutrition, de-worming, vaccinations, yearly physical examinations and yearly dentistry. |
Comprehensive dentistry |
Dental care for your horses is an important component to equine health care. Your horses’ teeth contribute to their ability to process and digest raw and processed hay and grains. Poor dental health can be linked to colic, choke, diarrhea, weight loss, lameness, neck and back soreness, jaw pain, resistance to bridling, and performance problems. All horses should have dental exams at least yearly. Most horses require dentistry yearly as well. Using the Powerfloat allows for a quick and efficient dental which is much easier on the horse. |
| Internal medicine |
Your horses’ health radiates from the inside out. Internal medicine is the nonsurgical treatment of disease. |
| Pre-purchase exams |
You wouldn’t buy a used car without “kicking the tires.” Buying a horse should be done with the same care. Investing in a pre-purchase exam can prevent expensive headaches later on. |
| Lameness exams |
Understanding the causes of lameness and developing an effective treatment plan is essential to keeping your horse sound and allowing him to maximize his performance potential. |
| Reproductive services |
Successful breeding begins with good health. Once you have made the decision to breed, you owe it to yourself and your horse to ensure that all the appropriate steps to prevent problems and maintain health throughout the process have been considered. |
| Emergency medicine |
Newmarket Equine Clinic’s doctors are on call 24-hours a day, 7-days a week to ensure you always have someone available during emergencies. |
| Integrative medicine |
Horses that suffer from a variety of conditions may benefit from the use of integrative medical techniques that extend and enhance the value of more traditional veterinary medical care.
Some of the techniques used at Newmarket Equine Clinic include: |
| · Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs |
Veterinary acupuncture and herbs are useful in the treatment and prevention of many equine ailments and lameness. Common conditions that are seen and treated with acupuncture and herbs include joint soreness, muscle soreness, back soreness, behavioral issues, respiratory conditions, reproductive problems as well as many other conditions. |
| · Chiropractic |
Chiropractic techniques are non-invasive procedures that utilize musculoskeletal stimulation to the nervous system to alleviate pain and allow healing. Conditions that are commonly treated with chiropractic include back, neck and pelvic pain, behavioral issues, lameness, TMJ pain, etc. |
| · Tui-na |
Tui-na is one of the five branches of traditional Chinese medicine. A “hands-on” body work system, it complements and enhances the effectiveness of acupuncture, herbs and chiropractic. It includes acupressure, physiotherapy, osseous manipulation and numerous massage techniques to prevent or aid in recovery from illness and injury. |
| Racetrack Medicine |
Dr. Caruthers and Dr. Markey provide comprehensive service to racehorses at Colonial Downs Racetrack from September through November each year. |
| Podiatry/Farrier Services |
There are certain conditions of the feet and limbs that are treated with and benefit from corrective trimming and shoeing. Some of these conditions include laminitis (founder), navicular syndrome, club feet, flat feet, thin soles, abnormal hoof angles, flexural limb deformities etc… Your farrier may or may not feel comfortable treating these conditions. You and your farrier have the opportunity to work with our veterinarians and farrier Pat Connor CJF, at our clinic or your farm, to treat these more difficult cases. |
| Inpatient Services |
Newmarket Equine Clinic offers a heated four-stall barn for overnight management. The clinic is also perfect for outpatient services, which include dentistry, routine care (vaccinations, wellness checks), pre-purchase exams, lameness evaluations and other procedures. We offer drop off service for the convenience of our working clients. |
